Qiveut Items
The qiveut grows only in the summer under their amazingly long coarse hair and they shed only once in the spring. After combing out the qiveut fur from their undercoat one gets only about 3 lb of yarn for every 5 or 6 lbs of wool. The low quantities of qiveut wool collected and the lack of stable Musk Ox farming, coupled with wool softer and warmer by weight than any other in the world are reasons why qiveut is one of the rarest and most coveted fibers in the world. Although both beautiful and wonderfully soft, qiveut is not the easiest fiber to work with. I have spent years of study perfecting a weaving and knitting style that makes wearing this fine fiber possible. I pioneered a technique of interweaving silks and wools to add body and strength while maintaining Qiveut’s exceptional softness and superior warmth. I draw my inspiration from my Sheep Mountain studio. Tucked away in the remote mountains of Alaska, I have worked to create garments and home accents that are warm, soft, and elegantly fashionable. Wonderfully versatile qiveut can be used for chilly nights around the house or out on the town. -Colleen White |
